to deepen, to dig; to delve deeply
To physically deepen or dig something further down (ahondar un pozo, to dig a well deeper), and, more often in everyday use, to delve deeply into a topic — ahondar en un tema, ahondar en las causas. This figurative sense is the one learners meet most in news articles and essays.
Dropping the preposition en before the topic when using the figurative sense — ahondar en un tema, not ahondar un tema, for "to delve into"; the literal digging sense, by contrast, does take a direct object.
Often confused with profundizar.
