desbandarse

A reflexive verb meaning to scatter or disperse in disorder, most often used for groups (crowds, troops, flocks) breaking apart chaotically — la manada se desbandó al oír el disparo (the herd scattered at the sound of the shot). It always carries a sense of disorderly, sudden dispersal, not calm, organized departure.
