Colloquial in Peru, Chile, and Bolivia: to lose one's mind, go crazy, act irrationally — built on perder la chaveta ("to lose the cotter pin," i.e. lose it mentally). Se chaveteó and le chaveteó la cabeza are typical.
Using chavetear outside its Andean/Southern Cone colloquial range and expecting universal recognition — perder la cabeza or volverse loco are the pan-Hispanic equivalents.
Often confused with enloquecer.
