Overwhelmingly means to chat online — send instant messages via an app or website: llevan toda la tarde chateando. Older, mostly Spain-specific sense: to go out for chatos, small glasses of wine, i.e. to go bar-hopping for a drink — largely eclipsed by the internet meaning today.
Assuming chatear only ever means the drinking sense (or vice versa) — outside Spain and outside older speech, the internet-chat meaning is essentially the only one a listener will assume.
