Used of a region, institution, or people governing itself without external control — common in political and historical writing about autonomy movements.

• La región reclama el derecho a autogobernarse. — The region claims the right to govern itself.
• Tras la independencia, el país tuvo que aprender a autogobernarse. — After independence, the country had to learn to govern itself.
• La universidad se autogobierna a través de un consejo elegido. — The university governs itself through an elected council.

Irregular like gobernar (me autogobierno, not *autogoberno) — the stem changes e→ie in the stressed forms.
