To assert oneself, to affirm one's own identity, opinions, or authority — often in a psychological or social sense: el adolescente se autoafirma frente a sus padres. Common in psychology and self-help writing.

• El adolescente se autoafirma cuestionando las reglas de casa. — The teenager asserts himself by questioning the rules at home.
• Necesita autoafirmarse más en su trabajo. — She needs to assert herself more at work.
• El nuevo líder se autoafirmó ante el resto del equipo. — The new leader asserted himself in front of the rest of the team.

Confusing autoafirmarse (asserting one's own identity/opinion) with afirmar (to state or claim something is true) — they share a root but aren't interchangeable.
