apiolar

to knock off; to do away with; to take out (kill)

Usage

Spanish criminal slang for "to kill" (apiolar a alguien), from an older sense of tying a dead animal's legs together after a hunt. In Argentina and Uruguay it takes a completely different, unrelated colloquial meaning: to catch on to something or wise up (apiolarse de algo).

Examples
  • En la novela negra, la mafia apioló al testigo. In the crime novel, the mafia killed the witness.
  • Al final se apioló de que lo estaban engañando. In the end he caught on that they were deceiving him.
  • Apiolar es una palabra típica del argot policial español.Apiolar is a word typical of Spanish police/underworld slang.
Common mistake

Assuming apiolar means the same thing everywhere — in Spain it's underworld slang for "to kill," while in the Río de la Plata region apiolarse means "to realize/wise up," a completely different and much less violent idea.
