apagar

to extinguish (a flame, fire), to douse; to satisfy

Usage

To turn off or extinguish — a light, a device, a fire, a flame, even a sound or feeling (apagar la radio, apagar las velas, apagar el entusiasmo). One of the most common everyday verbs in Spanish, the direct opposite of encender.

Examples
  • Apaga la luz antes de salir del cuarto. — Turn off the light before leaving the room.
  • Los bomberos apagaron el incendio en dos horas. — The firefighters put out the fire in two hours.
  • Apagó el celular para no distraerse durante el examen. — She turned off her phone so as not to get distracted during the exam.
Common mistake

Using cerrar for turning off electronics out of habit from English "shut off" — Spanish keeps apagar for anything electronic or fire-related, reserving cerrar for physically closing something.

Often confused with encender.
