aluzar

A regional and somewhat old-fashioned variant of alumbrar, meaning to light or illuminate — still heard in rural and dialectal speech in parts of Latin America and Spain, but standard modern Spanish uses alumbrar.

• Aluza el camino con la linterna, que está muy oscuro. — Light up the path with the flashlight, it's very dark.
• En el pueblo todavía dicen aluzar en vez de alumbrar. — In the village they still say 'aluzar' instead of 'alumbrar.'
• La lámpara aluzaba apenas el rincón de la cocina. — The lamp barely lit the corner of the kitchen.

Using aluzar in standard writing or outside dialectal speech — alumbrar is the form a learner should default to; aluzar will read as regional or rustic.
