Usage

To stop — an action, a vehicle, oneself — and, just as commonly, to arrest someone (the police sense). Also the everyday way to say 'quit' a habit (arrêter de fumer). One of the handful of verbs a beginner needs almost immediately.

Examples

Arrête la voiture, s'il te plaît ! — Stop the car, please!
La police a arrêté le suspect hier soir. — The police arrested the suspect last night.
Il a arrêté de fumer il y a un an. — He quit smoking a year ago.

Common mistake

Arrêter de + infinitive (to stop doing something) is easy to confuse with s'arrêter de, which isn't standard — the reflexive s'arrêter is used on its own (to come to a stop), not combined with de + infinitive.

In real life

expression "On n'arrête pas le progrès" — A well-known French fixed expression (documented since at least 1848) used, often ironically, to acknowledge that technological or social change is unstoppable.
