echar

to throw, toss, cast, jettison (to release an object from one's grasp so that it moves through the air); to pour (to cause to flow in a stream from a container)

Usage

One of Spanish's most flexible verbs: to throw or toss (echar una moneda), to pour or add (echar sal), to expel (echarlo del trabajo), and the core of many fixed phrases: echar de menos (to miss), echar una mano (to lend a hand), echar a correr (to start running). Regular -ar verb.

Examples
  • Echó la carta al buzón. — He dropped the letter in the mailbox.
  • Te echo de menos. — I miss you.
  • El niño echó a correr. — The boy broke into a run.
Common mistake

Translating 'to miss someone' as *perder*: it is echar de menos (or extrañar in Latin America). Also, echar a + infinitive means 'to start suddenly', not 'to throw'.

Often confused with extrañar.
