dolar

to plane (smooth wood with a plane)

Usage

A technical carpentry and stonework verb: to hew or smooth wood or stone with an axe or adze. Rare outside the trade. Stem-changing o→ue (duelo, duela). Don't confuse it with doler, 'to hurt', whose forms look similar.

Examples
  • El carpintero dolaba el tronco con el hacha. — The carpenter hewed the trunk with the axe.
  • Hay que dolar la viga antes de colocarla. — The beam has to be hewn before it's put in place.
  • Dolaron la piedra hasta darle forma. — They dressed the stone until it took shape.
Common mistake

Mixing it up with doler: me duele la espalda has nothing to do with dolar. Dolar is a craft term most learners never need.

Often confused with tallar.
