disgustar

to dislike, to not like, to displease; to disgust

Usage

To displease, upset or annoy: me disgusta la mentira. The reflexive disgustarse means to get upset or fall out. It works like gustar but with the opposite meaning, so the subject is the thing that displeases.

Examples
  • Me disgusta que llegues tarde siempre. — It displeases me that you're always late.
  • Se disgustaron por una tontería. — They fell out over something silly.
  • Le disgustó la noticia. — The news upset him.
Common mistake

Treating disgustar like a normal subject-verb verb — like gustar, the thing causing the feeling is the subject: me disgusta el ruido, not *yo disgusto el ruido*. It also sounds a bit formal; no me gusta is the casual option.
