dirigir

to direct; to lead, guide, conduct

Usage

One of the most useful transitive verbs: to direct, lead, manage or aim — dirigir una empresa, dirigir una película, dirigir la palabra a alguien, dirigir la mirada. The reflexive dirigirse a means to head toward a place or to address someone. Orthographic change: g becomes j before a/o (dirijo, dirija).

Examples
  • Ella dirige un equipo de diez personas. — She leads a team of ten people.
  • Me dirijo a usted para pedirle información. — I am writing to you to ask for information.
  • Nos dirigimos al aeropuerto. — We're heading to the airport.
Common mistake

Forgetting the g→j change in the yo form and present subjunctive: it's dirijo, not *dirigo*. Also, English speakers use dirigirse for 'to drive', but conducir/manejar is the verb for driving a vehicle.

Often confused with conducir.
