desinteresarse

to lose interest, to become uninterested

Usage

A reflexive verb meaning to stop being interested in or invested in something — se desinteresó del proyecto a mitad de camino. Always takes de before what the interest was lost in, and implies a gradual withdrawal rather than a sudden rejection.

Examples
  • Se desinteresó del proyecto en cuanto vio que no daría dinero. — He lost interest in the project as soon as he saw it wouldn't make money.
  • Los alumnos se desinteresan de la clase si no hay ejemplos prácticos. — Students lose interest in the class if there aren't practical examples.
  • Poco a poco me fui desinteresando de la política. — I gradually lost interest in politics.
Common mistake

Dropping the reflexive pronoun — desinteresarse is always reflexive, unlike its near-opposite interesarse en/por, so *desinteresó del proyecto to mean 'he lost interest' is ungrammatical.
