To drink — one of the most basic, high-frequency verbs in Spanish, used for beverages in general (beber agua, beber alcohol) and, in the fixed idiom beber los vientos por alguien, for being desperately in love with someone. Fully regular -er verb.
In much of Latin America, tomar is more common than beber for everyday drinking (tomar agua, tomar un café) — beber can sound slightly more formal or literary there, though it's completely neutral in Spain.
