to attest, to testify
To testify or bear witness, in the literal legal sense (atestiguar ante un juez) and more loosely for anything that serves as evidence or proof: las fotos atestiguan lo ocurrido. It's the standard word for courtroom testimony as well as figurative 'attesting to' something.
Using atestiguar loosely for any casual confirming, like vouching for a friend's story at a party — in Spanish it keeps a formal, evidentiary weight closer to legal testimony than confirmar or asegurar.
Often confused with confirmar.
