To cut off or intercept something before it develops further — atajar un incendio, atajar una crisis, atajar a alguien que huye — and, separately, to take a shortcut (atajar por el bosque). Both senses share the core idea of cutting a more direct or faster path to stop or reach something.
Confusing atajar (to cut off/intercept early, or to take a shortcut) with atacar (to attack) — they look and sound similar but are unrelated verbs with very different meanings.
