to attend (an event); to assist
To attend (asistir a clase, asistir a una reunión) — always with the preposition a before the event — and, in a more formal or medical/legal register, to assist or care for someone (asistir a un herido, asistir a un enfermo). The "attend" sense dominates everyday use.
The classic false-friend trap — asistir does not mean "to assist" in the everyday English sense of "to help"; it means "to attend." "To help" is ayudar, so using asistir for casual help ("I assisted him with his homework") is a direct, incorrect calque from English.
Often confused with ayudar.
