arrollar

to dumbfound; to roll, to roll away

Usage

To run over (a vehicle hitting a pedestrian or animal) or, figuratively, to steamroll or overwhelm an opponent — heavily used in sports journalism for a lopsided win: el equipo arrolló a su rival. Both senses share the image of something being flattened or swept aside by overwhelming force.

Examples
  • Un coche arrolló a un peatón en el cruce. — A car ran over a pedestrian at the crossing.
  • El equipo local arrolló al visitante 5 a 0. — The home team steamrolled the visitors 5-0.
  • La ola arrolló todo lo que encontró a su paso. — The wave swept away everything in its path.
Common mistake

Confusing arrollar (to run over/steamroll) with enrollar (to roll up, or colloquially "to be great/fun") — they look similar but mean very different things; mixing them up produces an odd or unintended sentence.
