arrematar

A colloquial variant of rematar used at a cultivated level in Mexico and parts of Central America and Colombia — sharing rematar's core senses of finishing something off (a seam, a deal, a task) and, in commercial contexts, winning something at auction.

• Arremató la costura con un par de puntadas. — She finished off the seam with a couple of stitches.
• El rematador arremató el cuadro en diez mil pesos. — The auctioneer sold off the painting for ten thousand pesos.
• Arremataron el trato con un apretón de manos. — They sealed the deal with a handshake.

Assuming arrematar is understood everywhere — rematar is the pan-Hispanic standard form; arrematar will sound regional or informal outside the countries where it's established.
