Usage

To seal an envelope or letter — cacheter une enveloppe, historically with sealing wax (cire à cacheter). Today mostly used for licking/closing an envelope, with the wax-sealing sense surviving mainly in historical or formal contexts.

Common mistake

Cacheter (to seal shut) is easily confused with cacher (to hide) since they look similar — cacheter une lettre means sealing it closed, not hiding it.
