Asking yes/no questions with est-ce que

Beginner

The simplest way to ask a yes/no question in French is to add est-ce que before a normal statement, with no change to word order at all: tu parles français becomes est-ce que tu parles français? (do you speak French?). Est-ce que has no direct English translationit's purely a question marker.

An even simpler, very common spoken option is rising intonation on an ordinary statement: tu parles français? said with a rising tone at the end is understood as a question, exactly like in casual English. Both of these are far more common in everyday speech than the more formal inversion pattern.
