French prepositions of place include à (at/to), dans (in, inside), sur (on, on top of), sous (under), and chez (at the home/place of). Chez has no direct English equivalent and is used specifically for people's homes or businesses: chez moi (at my place), chez le médecin (at the doctor's office).
Dans implies being inside an enclosed space (dans la boîte, in the box), while sur implies a surface (sur la table, on the table) — a distinction French keeps fairly consistent even where English might use "in" for both. Devant (in front of) and derrière (behind) round out the most common set for describing where something is relative to something else.
