Inherited from Middle French fesser, derived from Old French faisse, fece ( compare Old French faisser), derived from Latin fascia. The spelling and sense (originally "to strike with a rod") influenced by unrelated fesse (“buttock”)). Compare also Late Latin fasciāre.
