From Middle French cahut(t)e, from Old French quahute, chahute (13th c.). Further origin unknown. The main question is whether Middle Dutch kayhute (mid-15th c., modern kajuit) is from French or vice versa. However, the dating, non-initial stress, and lack of plausible Germanic derivations all point to French origin. In this case possibly from a confluence of Old Occitan cabane and Old French hute (modern hutte). Doublet of cajute, a (re-)borrowing from Dutch.
